Reliance jio is going to make smartphones at less price with a partnership with Google Android OS.
The smartphone will come along with data packs and is set to be launched in December 2020 or in the first quarter of 2021 according to a report by Business Standard.
In July 2020, Alphabet’s google Said it will invest 4.5 billion dollars. The upcoming affordable smartphone was promised by Reliance owner Mukesh Ambani in the company’s Annual General Meeting virtual event.
With this move, Reliance is looking to make India a “2G-mukt Bharat”. This smartphone can either support 4G or 5G networks. However, 5G is still not launched in India by any telecom company. But many 5G smartphones are available in the Indian market.
Reliance Jio revealed a partnership with Google and the development of a 5G network in India at its AGM. Mukesh Ambani said that the partnership will be for developing new, entry-level smartphones that will run tweaked Android OS, in an offer to bring the over 350 million feature phone users in India to the Smartphone ecosystem.
He also said, “Jio has created a complete 5G solution from scratch, that will enable us to launch a world-class 5G service in India, using 100 percent homegrown technologies and solutions.”
The manufactures of these smartphones may be outsourced to manufacturers in India. Jio had held talks with some phone manufacturers in India. It has gotten in touch with Lava as well as top global manufacturers including Foxconn and Wistron.
It will be a competition for Chinese phone makers. Jio has bought millions of users online for the first time. Jio’s proven record of ‘disrupting the market’ may have sent jitters to some Chinese phone companies. As a Reuters report said, “the new phone is set to pose a major challenge to Chinese vendors such as Xiaomi and BBK Electronics, owner of the Realme, Oppo, and Vivo brands that currently dominate a $ 2 billion(roughly Rs.14,713 crore)market for sub $100(roughly Rs 7,360) smartphones in India.”
Jio platforms include its telecom venture Reliance Jio Infocomm, with a base of 400 million.
